I got the following email from a friend:
Today’s Yaseen story:
Friend: Hi Yaseen I want one steak sandwich
Yaseen: ok sir you want anything to drink?
Friend: ok what do you have?
Yaseen: We have juices orange juice?
Friend: No…what else do you have..
Yaseen: You want special sir?
Friend: Ok what do you have?
Yaseen: We have steak sandwich sir!
Amazing!
Oh, and we learned today that Yaseen is MUCH better waiting on tables than answering calls and being the Cashier. So stay tuned for his new role!

Chalkboarding
Munch is closed today. But starting next friday we'll be open 7 days a week. So i'm here today at Ace Hardware buying blackboard paint for the area above the kitchen, where we currently have small blackboards -if you've noticed-. The problem is Ace only has green blackboard spray, no black until march probably. I'll take this and see how it fits.
On another note, Abdulla shot an interview with Yaseen yesterday, should be interesting. I'll try to post it today.

The Ali day
Ali (middle) was having a problem being an owner of the place. I had 6 missed calls from here earlier in the day asking me if we deliver to Salmiya or not. He's also been saying that we need new items for breakfast, without saying exactly what. He's getting more used to being an owner today when i saw him giving instructions in the kitchen.
Electricity... Smoke... Action!
We officially opened only a couple of days ago and business is doing good. We're using this time to invite friends over and have them check out the place if they haven't before.
Everything was good until.. yesterday at around 12PM (peak time) the electricity goes off and we basically cant cook. It stayed like that until 2:30, turning people away and bringing the kitchen to a dead halt.
Technicians from the building were busy so we called our contractor to solve the problem (which turns out to be a burnt out electric fuse), problem was solved after some time, all electricity is working.. except the oven.
Yaseen
In the mean time, Abdullah (a managing partner in Munch) gets a call from an angry customer complaining about Yaseen, the Cashier. This was the 3469th complaint on Yaseen this week alone. He will sadly have another role that is far less visible in the very near future (next post will be dedicated to Yaseen, I promise).
Ahmed & The Ducks
At the other side of the kitchen, Ahmed, the head chef, starts improvising by putting this week's special "Peking Duck Wrap" in the Pizza oven (because the original oven is not working). Nice job chef, only if he knew that the pizza oven is far to small for 3 ducks!
Smoke starts coming out of the pizza oven, Ahmed runs and opens it only for MORE smoke to come out. It was a foggy moment at Munch.
At the same time guests enter, Dana (Guru of Munch & Managing Director/general manager/you name it) was quick to jump in and seat them. Here she is in this picture trying to explain the smoke thing.. and that the electricity was out.
Meanwhile at the cashier's desk, Yaseen enters Creamy Mushroom Soup for a customer that ordered Penne with Cream of Mushroom sauce.
Finally, electricity was back and all was good. In this picture, Mohammed -guy in the middle, our operations manager- settling everything with the engineer, while you can see Chef Ahmad right behind them .. still trying to clear the smoke and clean the Pizza oven!
See you tomorrow :)

Oops!
And Oops there's the blog!
This was not meant to happen, if it wasn't for today's "blackout". Well.. it wasn't really a blackout, lights were on but the stove, oven, all the cooking material were not. Munch was out of electricity for about an hour, and I felt like i was in the middle of "Hell's Kitchen", or some reality show about a new restaurant. And there it came, a reality show about a bunch of guys who are passionatly in love with food (wow, slow down) and just opened a hip gourmet deli place and called it Munch (which we still debate if it was the right name or not)!
And because no producer offered a reality show for us, we thought why dont we blog it, and make you feel like one of us, share our ideas & problems. Who knows, this blog might later serve as a guide for you when you open your business.
We'll try to make it short around here, it should be fun!
Enjoy the ride ;)
